Woodland Survey Handbook is a manual that describes the methods for capturing flora and fauna of a forest and which sources to use to learn more about the background and management of the forest.
Forests are an important habitat and include some of the richest terrestrial nature reserves in Great Britain, but often outside. Unfortunately, some forests are threatened by various factors in their existence, which makes them not as rich as they could be. As with all nature, knowledge is the key to protection and conservation. To increase the diversity in forests, we first need to know which species they contain, how they have become as they are and understand how they fit into the broader landscape. Practical experiences from the field form the basis on which protection and management measures in Woodland Survey are based.
There is not one method that is suitable for all situations and needs, so the methods discussed range from a general walk around a forest to specific research methods and monitoring. Rapidly evolving techniques such as eDNA studies and the use of LiDAR are discussed.
This book is primarily intended for students, researchers and administrators who work on forest projects where the main question is to find out how important certain forests are and how they should be managed.

Woodland Survey Handbook is a practical guide for those working on forests and their management.

Keith Kirby worked for more than 30 years as a forestologist at Natural England and has a wealth of experience from various research projects in Great Britain.
Jeanette Hall now has a similar role in Scottish Natural Heritage and adds her experience in highland area. Both have extensively used the knowledge and colleagues from the professional field to write this book.
