For the true water bugs, the Nepomorpha, in Germany there has been a series of monographs available in the series Die Tierwelt Deutschlands, but a corresponding identification book was still missing. This identification key to Nepo- and Gerromorpha in Germany is a first attempt to such a book.
In a mere 70 pages, the reader will find a general introduction to the families of Nepomorpha and Gerromorpha. Furthermore, presence in Germany, habitat preferences, protection and suitability as an indicator in nature conservation are covered. Catching and preparing water bugs is described in detail. Guidelines for identification complete the introduction. There are richly illustrated family, genus and family keys for the larvae. On the accompanying plates there are up to three species per page pictures, allowing a quick comparison of closely related species. In genera with several species the identification key is put first. Furthermore, details are given on the bugs their size, biology (phenology, hibernation, and number of generations), ecology and distribution, preference for certain habitat types, as well as literature recommendations for further reading. A table records the conservation status based on the Red List. To round of the work, is an extensive bibliography is included.
Complementing the keys and drawings are Gerhard Strauss's excellent photos. All species are shown in habitus, and, where necessary, in detailed shots. The larvae have been illustrated in line drawings that have been made by Marlies Stöckmann.
