The complete drift net can be used in ecological studies in studying the downstream drift of invertebrates and Ichtyoplankton. The net is strung across a stream and allowed to sit overnight, collecting samples.
The frame of the drift net is made from high quality aluminium welded at all seams. It can be held in place on the river bed with large stones and bricks on swivel feet or if you prefer either spikes or metal rods (not included).
Additional holes have been drilled in the top of the frame so it is reversible and a safety line can be attached to a nearby secure point to avoid loosing it downstream in a sudden storm discharge.
About the nets
The nets are for use with the drift net frame. The major problem encountered with nets fitted with bottles or rubber funnels is that the flow of water causes organisms to be deposited on the net itself rather than in the bottle or funnel.
To overcome this problem you can use an open-ended Drift Net Bag with filter. Organisms caught by the net are deposited on a mesh filter screen of the same material as the net itself. This can be unscrewed in the field and either washed off into a container, to enable the screen to be re-used immediately, or dropped into a bottle for future examination.
The Drift Net Bag is made from polyester mesh and is available in either 1mm, 500µm or 250µm mesh, closed or open ended with a filter.
The bag is 0.65m long and tapers to a closed end or to an open end where the included filter is attached. The filter will be of the same mesh size as the net and replacement filters can be bought at Veldshop.nl.
