FLIR comes with an unprecedented sharp thermal imaging camera that is perfect for ecologists and biologists who are conducting research into the bat population. Until recently, the Helion XP28 from Pulsar was by far the most suitable for this kind of research due to the large view range. Unfortunately, the brand has decided to stop producing this affordable camera. Fortunately, FLIR has now released a similar model. In fact, we at Veldshop.nl dare to say that the Scion OTM266 is definitely an upgrade. The FLIR Scion OTM266 thermal imaging camera is specially designed for long-distance observations in complete darkness, inclement weather and the most challenging landscapes. With the Scion OTM (Outdoor Thermal Monocular) you are ready to record every encounter with these fast-flying mammals. This handheld monocular gives you the possibility to detect heat at more than 560 meters. In addition, you can now have the most high-tech options, such as the new 12µm boson detector, three observation modes, GPS, Wi-fi, Bluetooth, and endless photo and video recordings. The 12µm boson detector gives you a superior viewing experience, combining pixels from multiple shots in real-time (60Hz!). This way the image resolution is quadrupled. You can enlarge the standard optical zoom of 1x to 2x, 4x and 8x with a digital zoom.
Observation modes
The special feature of the OTM series from FLIR comes from the fact that these cameras have three observation modes. For example, you can use the standard Scouting Mode to observe as you are used to. The Lock-Span Mode is a new feature. This filters unwanted temperatures you do not want to see. Think of very cold or warm temperatures, or bright objects such as the sky and fire. With this, only the objects you want to focus on get a color; filtered objects are shown in black. This allows you to quickly focus on a bat colony and filter out the sky in the background. The third mode of the Scion OTM266 Thermal Imaging Camera is Picture-in-Picture . You use this option to zoom in further (2x) on a certain object in the image, without losing the rest of the field of view.
Application FLIR Scion OTM266
To use the camera, place the supplied battery holder with 2, 4 or 6 CR123 batteries in the compartment. The Scion OTM266 has a 'smart tray' that recognizes how many batteries have been installed. The operating time with 6 batteries is 4.5 to 5 hours. The unit also has an auto shutdown function.
There is now also a special battery pack for the Scion series that extends the battery life to 10 hours.
You can easily transfer captured images to another device via the built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth options, or with the supplied USB cable. The thermal imaging camera has 2GB of internal storage, which you can increase with an optionally available microSD card to a whopping 128GB. The camera fits on a universal tripod thanks to the 1/4" thread on the underside. The Scion series is IP67 certified and therefore completely waterproof.
