Nearly 15 years of work were necessary for a committee of more than 60 recognized experts, assembled by the Botanical Society of France (SBF) and led by Jean-Marc Tison and Bruno de Foucault, to achieve what is expected to become a reference work: a completely redesigned flora, going far beyond a mere compilation of existing identification keys. Up to date with the latest discoveries, Flora Gallica follows the latest classification (the APG III).
Flora Gallica appears as a single volume, and is portable into the field. The book contains determination keys of all natural, naturalized or cultivated species of Pteridophytes, gymnosperms and angiosperms present in mainland France and Corsica. The keys are enhanced by information on distribution, habitat and illustrations relevant to the reader. Covering the entire metropolitan area, Flora Gallica describes about 6000 taxa including nearly 5,000 natural species.
To its modern, practical and critical character (taking into account the variability of taxa and retaining only those with a real taxonomic value) are added some specifics that do not exist in any other flora in the world, such as an indication of the architectural model of trees, illustrated by Francis Hallé, a recognized specialist in plant architecture.
