Anyone considering granting rights to women might as well give equal rights to animals, Thomas Taylor sarcastically jokes in 1792. Exactly a century later, the British emancipation fighter Henry Salt realizes that Taylor (unintentionally) has a point: why shouldn't animals deserve the same legal protection as any other being? He elaborates on this idea in a completely original way in this still current and very readable essay.

Henry Stephens Salt (1851-1939) was a politically engaged British author. He advocated reform of education, the prison system, economic institutions and animal husbandry. He was friends with Gandhi and Tolstoy and also exerted a great deal of influence on later writers (including Peter Singer). His masterpiece Animals' Rights, Considered in Relation to Social Progress appears here in a translation by Jabik Veenbaas, who also provided the introduction.

Michel Vandenbosch, chairman of GAIA, writes in the afterword: Salt's unsurpassed book is full of enlightening insights and thoughtful eye-openers. Not a blind spot that escapes him. He skillfully shatters fallacies that still justify animal exploitation today. (…) Salt never ignores it.”

This book appears in the Animal Rights Library and was produced with the support of the Barth-Misset Fund, Stichting Dier & Recht and GAIA.
