Aphids (order Hemiptera) are small parasites of plants that occur worldwide and feed mostly on the phloem sap of the plants they inhabit. They are the main pests of a wide range of crops, causing not only physical damage but also transmitting plant pathogenic viruses. They are also an important source of food for small breeding birds, numerous predators and parasitoids, and help to supply humans with honey.
